EUDI Wallet rollout by country: where the 27 Member States stand in September 2026

Every Member State must offer at least one EU Digital Identity Wallet by 24 December 2026. Three months out, readiness is very uneven. Here is the picture, and what it means for your KYC roadmap.

Key takeaways

  • Only 4 Member States (Denmark, France, Germany, Italy) offer a public sandbox for relying parties to test against.
  • 9 countries plan to upgrade an existing national identity app rather than build from scratch.
  • Industry analysts expect a first wave of roughly 8 to 12 notified wallets by the December 2026 deadline, with varying features.
  • For banks, the 24 December 2027 acceptance obligation stands regardless of how fast each country moves.

The deadline

Under eIDAS 2 (Regulation (EU) 2024/1183) and its first implementing acts adopted on 28 November 2024, each Member State must make at least one EUDI Wallet available by 24 December 2026. Twelve months later, on 24 December 2027, regulated private relying parties, including banks and payment firms that must use strong customer authentication, must accept it.

Country-by-country readiness

The table below groups the 27 Member States using the categories of the September 2026 tracker published by eIDEasy, based on publicly available information. It measures how visible and testable each national project is, not whether a wallet is already certified.

Three trends to watch

1. Existing apps are the fast lane

Countries with widely used identity apps, such as Poland's mObywatel or Italy's IO app with IT-Wallet, are upgrading them rather than starting from zero. For banks, these markets are likely to deliver the first real wallet users.

2. Feature breadth will vary at launch

Analysts expect some early wallets to launch with a subset of features, for example identity data and age verification first, and other attestations later. Your integration should handle wallets that present different sets of attributes.

3. Business wallets lag behind

Wallets for legal persons, which are useful for Know Your Business (KYB) checks, are progressing more slowly than consumer wallets. Corporate onboarding will rely on existing processes for longer.
